Good/Bad news?
Looks as if the 64bit windows box has finally given up the ghost.
Yesterday I was working with it and I noticed I couldn’t rdp. Then a bit later it worked fine but I noticed a “This computer had recovered from a catastrophic failure. Send report?” box come up. Weird. So I sent the report and it came back saying there was a device driver failure, most likely. Hmm So I kept working and it froze a few minutes later. I closed the connection and came back to it. This time it froze trying to log in. Tried again a bit later, got in, and got the same catastrophic error message box. Then it froze shortly after that.
For some dumb reason I left it running over night… I came down this morning and it wouldn’t respond. I reached down and hit reset and the drive light stayed on for 5 minutes solid. So I held down the power button until it died and fired it back up again. I had it freeze up again on the login screen. So I powered it down.
Oh well.. I guess it might be time to drag the rest of the good hardware off the box and move it to the garage. What a long terrible nightmare that was? I’m back to the old 2ghz celeron machine I had a few years ago. But it’s working fine (knocks on wood).
Now I’ve got to get the extra 512 of ram out of the 64bit box and look at putting windows in a VM on the linux box so I can keep working on Meshwork. Oh yeah.. I’m still working on Meshwork.
Oh well. Off to work.
UPDATE:
I suppose I could try and hold the thing down in a wokring state long enough to tear open the event logs and see WHAT is failing. But come on… after all this? Could you really blame me if I ripped out all it’s juiciest parts and enjoyed a happy working linux box? *shrug*
