MonoCast: Getting set up.

So far I’ve recieved some good feedback on the idea of MonoCast.

I was chatting with abock about a logo for the site and while he was excited at the idea of a Mono Community centric podcast he steered me away from AAC and Garage Band. I really do like the ability to add pictures and chapter stops but apparently I’m the only one. He suggested MP3 and OGG. But didn’t know of a good set of tools for recording.

I started talking to CJ tonight about MonoCast and suggested maybe he could be involved. He instantly pointed to Audacity and agreed that OGG was the way to go. So.. there we go. I’ve played a very little bit with Audacity tonight while I’ve been sitting in bed updating my blog. It looks pretty nice and means that I can now conceivably do the podcast from some where besides Stacia’s iBook. It also means that I won’t have to pay $79 to upgrade her Garage Band to GB3 in iLife ’06. Or pay $1,900 for an iMac.

It looks like Gizmo Project does it’s own recording of calls so that’s an option as well. We’ve used it for our Seattle Mono Users meetings and found it really works and sounds better than Skype – for various reasons that Eric or Chris would love to go into. =)

Since I live in the middle of no where I won’t have the luxury of doing my first few podcasts with just 2 people and figuring the “call in” portion out later. I’m going to want to have people on from the get go. I may have to look at getting a dial in line. Either that or just expect everyone to either use SIP or Gizmo Project.

So it looks like I’m quickly coming down to the point in a project that every “planning geek” dreads. Time to actually DO it.

Please visit the forums and add your two cents about the proposed format as well as things you’d like to hear, people interviewed, or questions answered.

Also… if you’ve got some artistic talent and would be interested in designing a logo for us drop me an email. I’m looking to get a logo of the mono monkey with headphones and a microphone. Either the profiled Mono logo or the default hackergatchi from monologue would be cool.
