Funny what a ‘MWA’ can do

May 4th, 2006 Rev No comments

I posted my last post and was stressed and feeling crappy. Obviously. Then Love leaves a message saying ‘MWA!’ and I feel better. Maybe I’m bi-polar? *shrug*

I need a break from life for a while. A nice week long vacation for myself where I don’t have to worry about bills or deadlines or insurance or houses or crying kids or pissed off people or screwed up hardware.

Vegas might be nice.

I can do Vegas for under $1k for a week.

Confessions of a podcast junky

May 2nd, 2006 Rev No comments

Since I got my 4G Nano this Christmas – Thanks love. Thanks Pappy – I’ve been constantly listening to podcasts. I have a couple token albums on there. But mostly it’s 4 Gigs of podcasts. I listen non-stop which is good and bad. Bad because I can’t seem to keep it loaded with new content. I’m looking for more shows to keep me listening through out the week. Any suggestions?

Nerd Uprising!

Or Nerds Unite!

Just when you thought the world at large had come to accept our nerd dominance you see something like this.

Maybe it’s time the bigger of us nerdlings group together and jump a few jocks for a change.

Or perhaps we should just make sure he can never successfully use a cell phone, get cash from an ATM, or access his online banking.

Oooh if only it were so.

Note to barristas

April 21st, 2006 Rev No comments

There is a seam on the common paper coffee cup. If you put the lid on in such a manner that the seam is to the front… i.e.; under the “spouty bit” you drink from… after a short period of time the coffee works it’s way into this seam and eventually begins dripping out the front of the cup.

Don’t do that.

I would think that… given all the “advanced training” that Starbucks barristas must endure that they would mention this at some point. It’s pretty obvious. I’ve been able to figure it out with my feeble mind.

Unless of course… this is the barrista’s one form of getting back at the ever annoying customer… their way of saying “You’re an asshole, asshole.” In which case.. Hrmm I suppose I can get behind that.

I’ll just spin my lid, as it were.

Save my sanity

Someone help me out here. Is there process anywhere? Does any company really have:

  • A product cycle
  • communication
  • specs
  • managers who control the process
  • bug tracking
  • sufficient source control
  • automated builds
  • unit testing
  • Designers
  • artists
  • Any of this?

Does this exist at other companies – and not the ones I ever work at – or is this all just stuff people like to write about and sell to despondent people like me – though oddly enough I’ve never bought a book on process, it’s kind of… well common sense to me, though apparently not all that common.

Do companies really have planning periods? Do other companies not only set up goals.. but attainable goals.. and a career path… and then help make that happen?

Is there a company that places quailty above a release date?

Oooh.. one better… Is there any company not run by – and ultimately undone by – marketing?

Is there a company where HR is about the employee? Where HR people aren’t that lady from Office Space:

“Does somebody have a case of the Monday’s?”

“Via a clerical error you’re not covered by insurance.. and we won’t reinstate that until next year at open enrollment. But.. here’s a cute pencil with a fuzzy haired troll and the company logo.” <- That last one is based on an actual on-going experience.

    Bah.

    Petreley and crap

February 17th, 2006 Rev No comments

Another design flaw with the new Linux Journal – besides bringing Petreley on staff – is that it is now bigger and no longer rests on the toilet paper dispenser in the bathroom at work. Obviously no forethought or design work went into this change, either.

    Memo to Radio Stations:

    February 7th, 2006 Rev 3 comments

I just got an FM transmitter for my Nano so I don’t have to keep tucking the cord for my earbuds under the collar of my shirt while I drive too and from work. I had no idea there were so many radio stations – which lends to my argument later. It’s impossible to find a tiny bit of moderately dead air anywhere. Now I live “Near” Seattle.. but far enough in the sticks that I’d expect to get more clear channels. Then.. after you’ve got a decent channel you’ll lose it if you drive more than a couple blocks. So.. basically…

Pack it in, radio stations. No one is listening. I can’t stand to turn on the radio anymore because when it’s not commercials there’s a slim to none chance they’re actually going to play something I’d like to hear – I’m sure it’s mathmatically quantifiable. Radio formatting is becoming increasingly like television with ads making up nearly half of what’s played (it seems) but unlike television it’s not the soul source for it’s content – and even that’s coming to an end what with iTunes Video and other services. I’ve got the music and mostly podcasts that I want to hear so it’s fairly pointless your existing and sucking up the airwaves. I mean.. who needs half a dozen stations for each genre – hate that term – playing the same crap? And like I said… every inch of bandwidth realestate is in use. So much babbleing I can’t belive it.

Now.. I thought about this as I was driving in and I thought:

Me: “You privilaged jerk! Not everyone HAS a Nano or some mp3 player. Like not everyone HAS cable.”
    Me(also): “I don’t have cable, and I don’t watch TV!”
    Me(again): “That’s beside the point.”
    Me(you guessed it): “True”

Yes, not everyone has an mp3 player. And radio SUPPOSEDLY allows you to hear new music and expand your interests – though I’d suggest Pandora better suggestions without all the ads. Just consolidate stations then. Make room for other things. Of course.. in the future I’ll imagine it’ll be easier to connect you mp3 player to the radio. That’s the nice thing about being a little off.. I can have arguments with myself.

Anywho.. thanks for coming. In summary… radio stations: Go away. And for the search engines – RIAA: Bite me.

p.s. Someone just sent out a meeting request to all of corporate. Mid way through the list of required attendess was “eat me” lol!

You know you’re doing something right when…

February 4th, 2006 Rev No comments

I’m constantly referring to Justin’s O’Reilly Wireless Hacks book as the Seattle Wireless Hacks book. I even tried typing that just now. I guess – at least in my mind – they’re becoming pretty ubiquitous.
