So, I’m not the only one having issues with firmware 1.2 causing stutters in my podcast play back. So I thought, no problem. I’ll restore to factory settings. Well, no.. it just nuked all my content and restored it to 1.2. Well crap on me. It still doesn’t play worth a damn. Stuttering every 5 minutes or more often.
I’ve tried grabbing old firmware updates so I could get it back to 1.1.x. And of course it won’t let me. It tells me to use iTunes. And that only gets me 1.2.
Apple is slowly moving to my bad side with my MacBook in the shop and my Nano horribly screwed up.
Very unhappy. You hear that Apple?! UN-HAPPY!
Took the MacBook in on Monday and they didn’t even bother playing with it. They pulled up the paper work and scheduled it to go to the “depot” to get the motherboard and heatsinks swapped out.
I’ve heard on line that it’s believed that a wire running next to or over the heatsinks will actually have the insulation melt off of it during extrememly hot times. Then at any point later on the exposed wire can short the whole thing out and cause the shutdown. I suppose that makes sense as I had run it pretty hot for extended times but my shutdowns seemed to occuring randomly and not at times of high use.
Anywho. The guy said 5-7 days and the paperwork said 7-10. *shrug* I just want my MacBook back.
Also, I updated the firmware on my Nano today and noticed that it stutters now while listening to podcasts. Woop. Maybe I should let it finish figuring out the gapless play. Or maybe I should reset the thing. Likely when I get my MacBook back I’ll reset it and format it for Mac.
Less than a month after taking delivery I’ve had three random shutdowns on the MacBook. One earlier in the week and two this morning. Doesn’t help that I’m sick and was just looking forward to cuddling up with the MacBook betweens run to the bathroom. Oh well.. that’s why we 1st Gen buyers make sure we get Apple Care.
I want the new card. Yeah. A guy at work wants a dual head hot card. But he can’t afford to buy this one off me. Soooooo… I’ll sell him the 9600XT, keep the 6600GT, and use the cash to buy the new 64bit motherboard. Pure genius!!! Or insanity… probably the latter.
Well, I ordered it. I got a referel bonus for a co-worker and went ahead and ordered the XFX GeForce 6600GT. Can’t say as I don’t feel a liiiiiittle guilty. I dunno. It’s hard to balance responsibility with personal desire. Dunno when you really DESERVE something. But a small slice of my referel bonus isn’t too much. Maybe.
Perhaps I’ll do something responsible with the rest. Like pay off the credit card. Or… I could do something for a certain someone. Hmmm yeeeaaah.
I just looked around and realized I’ve got 6 computers I use at home. But I don’t have a single one that does everything I need. All my World of Warcraft playing tells me that I should be able to use these 6 as regents to create one massively powerful and useful computer. But I don’t see it happening.
Let down of the day. Linux on my 64bit box froze again… wasn’t fixed as I thought it was. And.. the card I have currently in there since my 9600xt bit the dust won’t do DX or OpenGL. So the graphics engine project I’ve been thinking about starting isn’t gonna happen.
But… IPV6 is running again. According to HE it died in June. So I guess I really noticed the loss. =)
I’ve officially declared my Asus 9600XT dead. No matter how much I fiddle with it or underclock it or cry and beg it consistenly throws artifacts when trying to do anything 3d. And once they start the corruption carries over to the desktop.
(Update: Not just little lines sort of artifacts.. but this)
I’ve tried a LOT to get this solved. New power supply, fan and heat sinks. Endless time twiddling bios settings. In the end I think it’s just toasted.
Currently I’m running a backup Nvidia GeForce 2 mx 32mb card. Almost totally worthless for WoW use. It’s also sad to have to run my 2005FPW with the analog connection rather than the DVI.
I returned the 500w power supply I got over the weekend and intended to swap it for an MSI 9600XT that was on sale for 85 bucks. But the sale had ended the day before. ACK!
I’ve got my eyes on this XFX 6600GT. The price for the chipset is more than 50 bucks cheaper at new egg than I can find anywhere else and the super reviews just keep rolling in on it. The XFX flavor apparently is the only AGP version of the card to actually run it’s memory at 1Ghz as well… all other coming in at 900mhz – PCI-Express runs a 1Ghz. The card is also supposedly very overclock friendly – though I’ve never really felt the need to do that with any hardware in the past.
So yeah.. I’d get that if I could.
I have this nice little fan with LEDs on that I want to find a use for now. Maybe I can find a way to rig it onto my north bridge.
With all the hardware I go through and have laying around perhaps I should take up the hobby of making pieces of art out of everything. Nah.. that’d be a dead on indication that I’m getting old. I noticed the other day that I’m wearing sneakers and colared shirts now rather than my boots and leather jacket. (Not to mention having two kids)
In my attempts to make Linux the only OS I boot to on my 64bit box I’ve done a number of things.
To stableize Linux (Ubuntu or Suse 9.2) I had to remove my 256MB stick from the system. Now I’m just at 512 pc2100 =/ But, the system runs much better. WinXP runs better in a VMWare machine than it does just booting straight.
So as I mentioned above, I setup XP in a VMachine so that I could access windows apps that I have to have for work or cross platform testing. Works great.
Now I’m on to games via Cedega. The big game that we’re playing at now is WoW. I’ve managed to setup Cedega 4.3-1 and get WoW installed. I wresteled with the video settings for a while and managed to get it to come up. Not full screen though, only 1280×1024. The other problem that makes it unplayable… You can’t target anything or activate it. Basically no right clicking. The cursor never changes.
When I get some time I’m going to try and down and compile Cedega 4.3.2 and see if that helps.
My system spec’s:
AMD64 2800+
512 pc2100
MSI K8N NEO Plat
ASUS ATI Radeon 9600XT 128mb
Dell 2005FPW
Ubuntu Haory
I’d be interested to hear peoples Cedega/Wine experiences.
